About
Dorothy Phoebe Mawuena Ayitey is currently a Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, where she teaches International Law; International Human Rights Law; International Humanitarian Law; Gender and the Law; and Natural Resources Law. Driven by a passion for social justice, Phoebe is committed to equipping her students with not only legal expertise but also a strong sense of humanity. She emphasizes the transformative power of law as a tool for addressing societal challenges and believes in inspiring the next generation of legal professionals to contribute meaningfully to social change.
Her research interests focus on women's and children's rights and the use of transnational courts for the enforcement of human rights. Her work also explores mechanisms for holding mining companies accountable for human rights abuses, especially in relation to environmental and community impacts.
A graduate of the University of Ghana (BA) and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (LLB), Phoebe also holds two master's degrees: an LLM in Global Security, Sustainability, and International Human Rights from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, and an LLM in Natural Resources Law from the University of Ghana. She was the valedictorian for both LLM programmes.
Before joining the University of Ghana School of Law, she worked as a Senior Associate in the law firm of Blagogee Blacksword and Co. in Accra, where she led the Family Law and Pro Bono department.
She has served as a consultant and conducted research on human rights issues for both national and international organizations, including the Clooney Foundation for Justice, the Penn Development Research Initiative, and CEDAW.
