University of Ghana School of Law Explores Global M&A Dynamics and ESG Integration with Columbia Law in Paris

A 20-member delegation from the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) led by Mr. Courage Asabagna, the Programme Coordinator for Financial Markets Law and Regulation, in the company of UGSoL’s LLM and MA students from the Corporate and Commercial Law and Financial Markets Law and Regulation Programmes, embarked on a one-week seminar organised by Columbia Law School at the historic Reid Hall in Paris, France, from 15th to 19th April 2024.

Adam Kolker, Dean and Executive Director of International and Comparative Law Programs at Columbia Law School, facilitated this seminar in collaboration with the International Partnerships Unit of UGSoL.

This seminar focuses on the concept of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) and global trends in 2024 while offering a practical introduction to key issues arising in $100+ million cross-border deals. The course offers an overview of the deal cycle, examining political, regulatory, and risk-balancing considerations. It also explores the growing impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria on deal making, and how businesses can integrate ESG into daily operations. The course also includes an immersive workshop simulating the negotiation of a real-world matter: the break-up of a joint venture spanning multiple countries.

The Lead Coordinator for this one-week seminar is María Luisa Cánovas who teaches M&A at Columbia Law School and has been ranked for over a decade as a leading New York lawyer for M&A in Latin America by, among others, Chambers Latin America (2022), Chambers Global (2022), The Legal 500 Latin America (2022) and Latinvex “Top 50 Female Lawyers in Latin America.”
Also in attendance on this trip are Ms. Naomi Amoakohene, the Head of the Admissions and Human Resources Unit of UGSoL, and Ms. Edinam Abusah the Teaching Assistant of the Corporate and Commercial Law Programme.
