GENDER AND THE LAW (LL.M. & M.A.)

Knowledge and understanding of the intersection of gender issues and law, and the key regulatory frameworks for gender issues, are crucial to proper development of the country, as gender permeates all sectors and industries, and, where properly utilised, is a growth catalyst that aids the development process of any economy. The policy, legal and regulatory frameworks, and the right practitioner approaches of the sector are essential to enable an economy reap the touted benefits. It is in recognition of this that UGSoL has gone to great lengths to mount this programme.

The overall objectives of the MA/LL.M Gender and the Law programme are to:
1.    assist students do further research on the relationship between gender and law through a teaching and learning experience that connects this to transnational feminist theories and activisms.
2.    encourage students to research and analyse legal conceptions of conflict, security, property, family and other important concepts from a gender perspective.
3.    build the analytical skills of students, through encouraging writing that has both theoretical claims and substantive legal claims.
4.    equip students with knowledge about gender issues in the work place, particularly within the context of discrimination, and gender role stereotyping as well as unpaid work.
5.    introduce students to the layers of discrimination caused by the intersection of gender, law and disability.

 


 

COURSE DURATION
One (1) Academic Year

Venue: University of Ghana – Accra City Campus, Adabraka.

Format: Hybrid (in-person and online lectures)

Time:

  • Mondays – Thursdays: 5:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Fridays                       3:00pm – 8:00pm

 

Fees:

  • GHS 22,355.00 (Ghanaians)
  • USD 9,178.00 (Non-Ghanaians)
  • GHS 2,445.00 (Admission Processing Fees)

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • First degree from a recognized University.
  • Shortlisting / Interview
  • M.A. – proven interest, exposure or experience in Gender and the Law.
  • LL.M. – Bachelor of laws degree or its equivalent.

 


PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:
This two semester programme comprises, lectures, seminars and dissertations. Continuous assessment shall be the main mode of examination.
Students are therefore expected to actively participate in topical seminars and make contributions on legal gender issues such as gender-based violence, and the human rights of women and other minority groups. Research works leading to dissertations and papers are expected to be selected according to student interests. Industry practitioners shall facilitate seminars to increase student exposure to the job market and industry needs.
