LAW OF THE SEA AND OCEAN GOVERNANCE (M.A. & LL.M.)

The ocean governance sector is an essential growth catalyst that could aid the development process of any economy. The policy, legal and regulatory frameworks, and the right practitioner approaches of the sector are, however, essential to enable an economy reap the touted benefits. It is in recognition of this that UGSoL has gone to great lengths to mount these Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance programmes.

The overall objectives of the MA/LL.M Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance programme are:
1.    To improve the theoretical and practical training available to lawyers and non-lawyers in Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance.
2.    Assist students to unpack and articulate the dynamics of ocean-related development strategies in order to leverage Africa’s potential for sustainable ocean-driven growth.
3.    Offer a stimulating environment where pragmatic policy proposals and innovative solutions are conceived.
4.    Encourage students interested in the ocean and climate decision policy-space to prioritise the health of the oceans.

 


COURSE DURATION
One (1) Academic Year

Venue: University of Ghana – Accra City Campus, Adabraka.

Format: Hybrid (in-person and online lectures)

Time: Mondays – Thursdays: 5:00pm – 8:00pm
           Fridays:                      3:00pm – 8:00pm

Fees:

  • GHS 22,355.00 (Ghanaians)
  • USD 9,178.00 (Non-Ghanaians)
  • GHS 2,445.00 (Admission Processing Fees)

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • First degree from a recognized University.
  • Shortlisting / Interview
  • M.A.     – proven interest, exposure or experience in Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance.
  • LL.M.      – Bachelor of laws degree or its equivalent.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:
This two-semester programme comprises lectures, seminars and dissertations. Continuous assessment shall be the main mode of examination.

Students are therefore expected to actively participate in topical seminars and contribute to discussions on pertinent issues in Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance. Research works leading to dissertations and papers are expected to be selected according to student interests. Industry practitioners shall facilitate seminars to increase student exposure to the job market and industry needs.
