Collaborative Meeting Between the National Black Law Students’ Association (NBLSA) and the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSOL)

The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) hosted a meeting on Sunday, January 7, 2024, with representatives from the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) to explore potential collaboration between the Association and the University.

The University of Ghana School of Law's delegation, led by the Dean, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, and the School Administrator, Ms. Susie Lamptey, engaged in discussions with Mr. Jarrius Adams, the National Chairman of the NBLSA.

Mr. Adams outlined the NBLSA's mandate, highlighting the duration of their operations and the chapters established in Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom. He emphasized that their outreach in Africa marked the first since 2014 and expressed interest in a collaboration with UGSoL for their Ghanaian Chapter.

He spoke about the familiar issue plaguing Africa and black Americans; thus, the majority of deaths being from non-communicable diseases. He also mentioned how moved they were by the Volta Dam spillage and their decision to contribute to the cause. He stated, "But for us, we are really interested in seeing how we can interact with our international chapters because our leadership has 90% of our board re-elected every year. So, we wanted to see how we can bridge the gap with the law systems in both countries."

In response, Prof. Atuguba highlighted UGSoL's annual collaboration with Harvard University. He mentioned sending a report to Harvard and assured the NBLSA that a copy would be provided for their review to identify areas of potential assistance. Prof. Atuguba also discussed ongoing efforts, such as setting up an assistive reading lab for law students with disabilities, estimated to cost approximately $150,000, as a potential area for NBLSA support.

Additionally, he proposed a way to subsidize fees for students attending international exchange programmes with allied schools. The meeting held promise for a collaboration between the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) and the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA).
