About

Dr Prince Obiri-Korang is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL), where his teaching and research focus on International Commercial Law, Private International Law, Commercial Law, Banking Law, and Law and Development. He also serves as the Coordinator of the LLM in Law and Development Programme at UGSoL. In addition, he is Senior Research Fellow at the Research Centre for Private International Law in Emerging Countries.
Dr Obiri-Korang obtained the Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree from the University of Johannesburg in 2020, completing the programme in record time. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Professor Dr Dr Dr Michael Martinek, former Chair of the Institute for European Law at Saarland University, Germany, examined the choice of law rules applicable to international commercial contracts. He previously obtained the Master of Laws (LLM) in International Commercial Law from the University of Johannesburg and was awarded the University’s prestigious Global Excellence Stature (GES) Scholarship for both his master’s and doctoral studies in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement.
During his doctoral studies, he was appointed as a Research Fellow at the Institute for European Law, Saarland University, Germany. Following the completion of his doctorate, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Research Centre for Private International Law in Emerging Countries, where he subsequently rose to the position of Senior Research Fellow.
Dr Obiri-Korang’s research explores the regulation of cross-border commercial relationships through the lens of Private International Law, International Commercial Law, regulation of Multinational Enterprises, Banking Law, and Law and Development. His scholarship seeks to advance coherent legal frameworks for international commerce, promote commercial law reform, and strengthen legal certainty and sustainable economic development through law.
He was one of the lead experts involved in the development and drafting of the African Principles on the Law Applicable to International Commercial Contracts, a landmark soft-law instrument developed by the Research Centre for Private International Law in Emerging Countries under the leadership of Professor Jan L Neels to promote legal certainty, harmonisation, and predictability in cross-border commercial contracting across Africa.
He has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed journals, and his scholarship has informed both academic and policy debates on Private International Law, International Commercial Law, and commercial law reform in emerging economies. He serves on the Editorial Board of Actual Problems of Politics, a peer-reviewed journal published by the National University “Odesa Law Academy”, Ukraine.
He was awarded the University of Johannesburg Faculty of Law Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Year Award in 2021 and again in 2024, becoming the only postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty’s history to receive the award twice.
Dr Obiri-Korang supervises doctoral and master’s theses and dissertations in Private International Law, International Commercial Law, and related fields, and has examined numerous postgraduate theses across different universities. He lectures annually on the University of Johannesburg’s flagship LLM in International Commercial Law programme and has delivered invited lectures at universities, professional institutions, and international conferences on Private International Law, International Commercial Law, Multinational Enterprises and the Law, International Commercial Dispute Resolution, Comparative Commercial Law, and Law and Development.
