The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) marked a significant milestone on Thursday, July 31, 2025, with the handover of the deanship from Prof. Raymond Atuguba to Prof. Peter Atudiwe Atupare. This event signifies the start of a new era for the school and offers an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and contributions of the outgoing Dean.
The event which took place at the University of Ghana School of Law’s Auditorium saw the attendance of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the provost of the college of Humanities, Prof. Joseph Awetori Yaro, former Dean of UGSoL Prof. Akua Kuenyehia and a host of other dignitaries.
The Vice Chancellor, addressing the ceremony, eulogized Prof. Atuguba and mentioned a few of his achievements as Dean of the Law School.
“Prof. Atuguba has a passion for international collaborations. Over the years, he’s quietly built a global network for the school, creating partnerships that have opened up opportunities for research, exchange for faculty, staff and students, and fresh ideas. He’s helped make the school of law a player on the world stage”, she stated.
Prof. Atuguba's tenure as Dean was marked by exceptional leadership and a clear vision for the school. During his tenure, the school experienced significant growth and development.
In his parting speech, Prof. Atuguba offered valuable advice to Prof. Atupare: "You can never truly lead unless you genuinely love the people God has given unto you to lead... Society thrives when wisdom leads and passion is restrained, but it also needs passionate action to grow and thrive. Find the right balance." Prof. Atuguba also presented Prof. Atupare with comprehensive documentation to aid him in his new role.
Meanwhile, Prof. Peter Atupare takes the helm as the new Dean of UGSoL, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise. In his acceptance speech, he expresses gratitude at the opportunity to become the chief driver of the University of Ghana School of Law. “I take this position with modest pride and hope. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to my brother, teacher and Dean, Professor Raymond Atuguba. Your tenure has been marked by visionary leadership, steadfast dedication, and tangible achievements that have brought pride to this school and to the university as a whole” he stated.
Speaking on his vision for the School me he said, “ we will push for the establishment of our specialized research centers and strengthen our policy engagements and partners to advance our quality invasion. I will uphold the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all we do and I will strive to ensure that this school will remain not just as an academic institution but a vibrant community where scholarship thrives”
As he embarks on this new chapter, the school looks forward to his leadership and vision driving innovation and excellence. Prof. Atupare's era is expected to usher in new initiatives and opportunities that will further enhance the school's reputation and academic offerings.
The UGSoL community extends a warm welcome to Prof. Peter Atudiwe Atupare and looks forward to the exciting developments that his leadership will bring. As the school begins this new chapter, it is confident that Prof. Atupare's stewardship will propel UGSoL to even greater heights.
