Lebanese Community in Ghana Honours UGSoL Students with Scholarships for Academic Excellence

The University of Ghana School of Law hosted the annual Lebanese Community in Ghana Scholarship Award Ceremony, celebrating academic excellence and the long-standing  partnership between UGSoL and the Lebanese Government, founded on shared values and a mutual commitment to advancing opportunities through legal education.
The event, held on Thursday, 2nd April 2026, at the Law School auditorium, brought together faculty, staff, family members, and distinguished guests from the Lebanese community to honour outstanding students from Levels 200, 300, and 400.

In her welcome address, the moderator, Ms Katherine Aglobitse, set the tone by highlighting the ceremony as a celebration of not only academic achievement but also the enduring benevolence of the Lebanese community, which has become a vital pillar in supporting exceptional law students.
The Chairperson for the ceremony, Professor Joseph Yaro, Provost of the College of Humanities, commended the Lebanese community for its continued commitment and unwavering support for the Law School. He described the occasion as a recognition of students’ hard work and a testament to the community’s dedication not only to education in Ghana but specifically to legal education. Prof. Yaro encouraged the awardees to uphold the values behind the scholarships and ensure that the opportunities provided contribute meaningfully to the advancement of Ghanaian society.

The Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Professor Peter Atudiwe Atupare, delivered an inspiring message to the gathering. He described the day as "a celebration of possibility, opportunity, partnership, and progress." Speaking directly to the Lebanese government and community, the Dean said, "You have planted seeds of excellence in this law school, year after year. Your generosity does more than pay fees. Indeed, it unlocks potential, hopes, and dreams."
Addressing the awardees, Professor Atupare delivered an inspiring charge, reminding them that excellence is cultivated through perseverance, hope, and dedicated effort. He emphasised the transformative role of law in building a just society and urged the students to see themselves not only as future leaders but as active contributors to the legal profession and the collective pursuit of justice.

The highlight of the speeches came from Mr. Mohamed Balbeki, the Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Lebanon in Ghana, who explained the community’s focus on legal education. "Rule of law is the backbone of democracy and the foundation of human rights," Mr. Balbeki asserted. "Without it, no meaningful progress can be achieved. The Lebanese community believes in the rule of law as a tool for social transformation."
In a further demonstration of their commitment to supporting legal education, Mr. Balbeki announced the addition of two new scholarship positions to the programme, effective this year. The expansion reflects the community’s continued dedication to creating greater access to legal education and supporting more deserving students

The ceremony culminated in the presentation of scholarships to outstanding students across Levels 200, 300, and 400. The 2026 beneficiaries were:

    Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Nahum Agyapong, President of the UGSoL Law Students’ Union, expressed gratitude to God, the Lebanese government, and the university community. "The law and the rule of law will continue to be the backbone of democracy," he reaffirmed, thanking the Dean, faculty, and administrative staff for their dedication to quality legal education.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Aglobitse encouraged the awardees to embrace their responsibility as agents of positive change, reminding them that each of them is “a tool for transformation for our society.” The ceremony ended with a photography session, as the honourees reflected on their achievements and renewed their commitment to pursuing excellence and applying their legal education in service to society.
