UGSoL leading the way to Effective Ocean Governance Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) has disclosed that the UGSoL has completed preparations to introduce two new programmes in ocean governance to equip key stakeholders in the ocean-based economy with the requisite skills and techniques to effectively govern the ocean. The programmes are M.A. Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance and LL.M Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance which will commence in January 2023. They have also been introduced to deal with the rising concern of the need to safeguard the ocean.
Prof Atuguba made the disclosure when he gave a welcome address at a two-day Ocean Governance Need-Based Capacity Development Training Seminar organized by the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences (MAFS), University of Ghana, with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) on 8 th September, 2022 at the University of Ghana School of Law. He encouraged participants of the seminar to continuously lend the University their expertise and knowledge in the area of ocean governance when called upon saying “As a school of law, with a keen interest in research, teaching and building the capacity of industry players in law, especially in this area [ocean governance], we hope we can rely on you as our contact persons of your various institutions to gain a deeper understanding on ocean governance to help deliver our very best to help equip other stakeholders in the ocean-based economy on safeguarding and governing the ocean.” Professor Daniel Ofori, the Provost of the College of Humanities, University of Ghana, in his remarks commended the School of Law and the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences of the University of Ghana for bringing the Ocean Governance and Development vision to reality. He also encouraged participants to partner with the university to use the ocean as a huge instrument of development.
The Ocean Governance and Development Project training is aimed at supporting the development of Ghana as an ocean-based economy, through capacity building of public sector officials to enable them develop ocean-integrated policies; enhance inter-agency coordination in respect of ocean policies; and to address problems facing Ghana in ocean governance and the implementation of the law of United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and related instruments. The key topics discussed at the 2-day seminar were; Fisheries, Geology and Seafloor Resources, The United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and Maritime Boundaries.
