UGSoL Makes History: Record-Breaking Graduation Ceremony Lights up the Campus

On Saturday, August 10th, 2024, the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) made history with a spectacular graduation ceremony at the Cedi Conference Centre. The event was nothing short of grand as 261 bright and ambitious students crossed the stage, ready to take on the world. Among them were 227 Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) graduates and 34 Master’s students, all beaming with pride and excitement.
The ceremony was graced by an impressive lineup of distinguished guests, including the Dean of UGSoL, the Dean of Graduate Studies, and the School of Law’s Administrator. Representing the Chancellor was

Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho, a prominent member of the UG Council and the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Student and Academic Affairs, alongside Prof. Gordon Awandare. Adding even more prestige to the event was the guest speaker, Prof. Muhammed Tawfiq Ladan, CEO of the Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho kicked off the ceremony with an inspiring message, highlighting the University of Ghana’s new 5-year strategic plan. “We’re committed to providing a transformative experience for our students through innovative, technology-driven, and interdisciplinary learning. As alumni, we hope you’ll join us in realizing this bold new vision,” she urged the graduates, sparking a wave of applause.
The guest speaker, Prof. Ladan, delivered powerful words of wisdom, urging the graduates to embrace challenges as opportunities. “With the knowledge of law, and any other secondary and tertiary knowledge, we do not run away from challenges. We see them as chances to navigate through and make the best of every situation for the benefit of all. So, never run away from challenges,” he encouraged, leaving the audience energized and motivated.

The ceremony’s emotional high point came when valedictorian Ms. Dion Akosua Kassim took the stage. Her heartfelt speech resonated with every graduate, as she reflected on the ups and downs of the law school journey. She gave a special shout-out to the inaugural cohort of the Post-First Degree Programme, recognizing the unique challenges they faced in balancing work and studies.
“Our lecturers deserve endless credit for their passion, their willingness to entertain our divergent views, and for bringing clarity to even the most challenging courses. Their dedication has been unwavering, and they’ve not only deepened our understanding of the law but also instilled in us the ethical compacts that will guide our professional lives,” Dion passionately declared, drawing cheers from her fellow graduates.

The numbers tell a story of excellence: out of the 227 LL.B graduates, 16 achieved first-class honors, 88 earned second-class upper honors, 117 secured second-class lower honors, and 6 finished with third-class honors. The ceremony also celebrated the diversity of the graduating class, with 155 women and 72 men receiving their degrees. Among them were two inspiring students—one visually impaired and another with physical disabilities—who triumphed over their challenges to reach this milestone.

As the ceremony drew to a close, the new graduates couldn’t contain their excitement. The air was filled with a sense of accomplishment and readiness as they prepared to embark on the next chapter of their legal journey. This graduation wasn’t just an end—it was a new beginning, a symbol of hope, belief, and determination as these future leaders set out to make their mark on the world.
