
The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) has reached a historic milestone, securing its position as the premier institution for legal excellence in Ghana and the West African sub-region. According to the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, released on 21st January 2026, UGSoL now ranks as the sixth-best law institution on the African continent. By placing in the elite 251–300 global band, the University of Ghana stands as the only law school in the country to earn a spot in these prestigious rankings.
This achievement places UGSoL in the company of Africa’s top-tier universities, reinforcing its status as a global centre for legal scholarship and legal training on the African continent. This milestone reflects UGSoL’s unwavering commitment to high-impact research and world-class legal education on the global stage.
The Times Higher Education Law subject ranking evaluates universities worldwide using carefully weighted performance indicators that assess teaching quality, research environment, research
excellence, industry engagement, and international outlook. The Law subject covers a wide range of legal disciplines, including constitutional and administrative law, international law, commercial and corporate law, criminal law, and legal theory. UGSoL’s strong performance across these indicators reflects its sustained commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and global relevance.

This achievement is a powerful testament to the School’s enduring legacy in defining the legal landscape of Ghana, African and the international community. For decades, the University of Ghana School of Law has been the training ground for legal jurists, eminent judges, scholars, and policymakers who continue to shape policies on democratic governance, rule of law and the protection and enforcement of fundamental human rights in Ghana as well as Africa.
